Stars and Bonds in Crossing-Critical Graphs

چکیده
The structure of previous known infinite families of crossing–critical graphs had led to the conjecture that crossing–critical graphs have bounded bandwidth. If true, this would imply that crossing–critical graphs have bounded degree, that is, that they cannot contain subdivisions of K1,n for arbitrarily large n. In this paper we prove two new results that revolve around this question. On the positive side, we show that crossing–critical graphs cannot contain subdivisions of K2,n for arbitrarily large n. On the negative side, we show that there are simple 3-connected graphs with arbitrarily large maximum degree that are 2-crossing–critical in the projective plane. Although the former conjecture is now disproved in a subsequent manuscript by Dvořák and Mohar, our results are not affected, and some interesting questions remain. Namely, can the bandwidth conjecture still be true for simple 3-connected graphs in the plane?

On the crossing numbers of Cartesian products of stars and graphs of order six
The crossing number cr(G) of a graph G is the minimal number of crossings over all drawings of G in the plane. According to their special structure, the class of Cartesian products of two graphs is one of few graph classes for which some exact values of crossing numbers were obtained. The crossing numbers of Cartesian products of paths, cycles or stars with all graphs of order at most four are ...
متن کاملMETA-HEURISTIC ALGORITHMS FOR MINIMIZING THE NUMBER OF CROSSING OF COMPLETE GRAPHS AND COMPLETE BIPARTITE GRAPHS
The minimum crossing number problem is among the oldest and most fundamental problems arising in the area of automatic graph drawing. In this paper, eight population-based meta-heuristic algorithms are utilized to tackle the minimum crossing number problem for two special types of graphs, namely complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs. A 2-page book drawing representation is employed for ...
متن کاملOn the crossing numbers of Cartesian products of paths with special graphs
There are known exact results of the crossing numbers of the Cartesian product of all graphs of order at most four with paths, cycles and stars. Moreover, for the path Pn of length n, the crossing numbers of Cartesian products G Pn for all connected graphs G on five vertices and for forty graphs G on six vertices are known. In this paper, we extend these results by determining the crossing numb...
متن کاملThe reliability Wiener number of cartesian product graphs
Reliability Wiener number is a modification of the original Wiener number in which probabilities are assigned to edges yielding a natural model in which there are some (or all) bonds in the molecule that are not static. Various probabilities naturally allow modelling different types of chemical bonds because chemical bonds are of different types and it is well-known that under certain condition...
متن کاملIncidence dominating numbers of graphs
In this paper, the concept of incidence domination number of graphs is introduced and the incidence dominating set and the incidence domination number of some particular graphs such as paths, cycles, wheels, complete graphs and stars are studied.
